Gutter installation starts with a measurement of each run and a close look at the fascia and soffit, since rotted wood has to come out first. We set the pitch toward the downspout, seal the joints with gutter sealant, and follow building code on hanger spacing.
A working gutter line carries water off the eave and past the drip edge, where it would otherwise wick into the roof deck and freeze. Freeze-thaw cycles then lift shingle edges and drive ice dams under the underlayment.
